Challenges of Magnetic MWD Surveying in Western Canada
Please join us on Thursday September 29, 2016 where we will have a discussion on the use and issues associated with magnetic MWD surveying, and the implementation of techniques such as in-field referencing (IFR) and multi-station analysis (MSA).
In recent years, the use of survey management techniques have been increasing in the Canadian oilfield. This talk will discuss some of the issues that can limit MWD surveying with a focus on the situation in Canada. Methods such as In-Field Referencing and Multi-station Analysis that can be used to improve accuracy will be described. Case studies will be discussed which demonstrate the practical benefits of using survey management.
Andrew McGregor, Ph.D. (Tech21 Engineering Solutions/Weatherford)
Andrew McGregor has a degree in Physics and Astronomy and a Ph.D. in Astronautics. He has more than 20 years experience in the fields of navigation and positioning, across a range of industries. After graduating, his first job was related to the use of wide-area GNSS differential corrections for the guidance of civil aircraft, both in the en-route and approach phases of flight. He was awarded the Royal Institute of Navigation’s Silver Medal for some of this work. Subsequently, he worked on data fusion algorithms for inertial navigation systems, used by the army to provide pointing information for artillery systems.
Surprisingly this led to a role in borehole positioning with Tech21 Engineering Solutions. Since 2006 he has worked in the field of survey management, and has been involved in running IFR surveys and developing multi-station analysis software. He is now Weatherford’s Survey Management Domain Champion and is also the chairman of the ISCWSA Error Modelling sub-committee.
