Real-Time Drilling Optimization Using Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE)
Please join us on Monday April 11, 2016 where we will have a discussion on utilizing Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE) in real-time optimization during drilling operations.
The concept of Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE) was conceived 50 years ago and, in the past decade, has been used extensively by the drilling industry to optimize performance of on-bottom drilling. In this talk, we review the fundamental theory behind MSE and show how it can be used to maximize rate of penetration (ROP) and increase rig efficiency. We also discuss the practical challenges associated with real-time monitoring of MSE and identify several methods that can be used to address those challenges. Specific case studies will be presented and recent developments in MSE optimization will be discussed.
Presenter: Stephen Lai, Pason Systems
Stephen Lai is the Drilling Systems team lead at Pason Systems. Drilling Systems is an applied research team that specializes in drilling performance assessment and optimization using real-time and historical drilling data. Prior to joining Pason, Stephen spent over 15 years developing high-technology products at Nortel and several Silicon Valley/Ottawa startups. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering, has authored several SPE and IEEE papers, and is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Calgary.
